SHIRLEY, Mary Evangeline Morey Nye, 86, died peacefully at home with her family surrounding her in Shirley on Jan. 10th, 2012. She was born Sept. 7th, 1925 in Greenville, the daughter of Angus and Martha (Mitchell) Morey.\n\nMary lived her childhood in Rockwood on the "Northern Hill". She went to several high schools in Maine, New Jersey, and New York City.\n\nShe lived in Rhode Island and worked as a telephone operator during WWII then moved to New Haven, CT and worked for several years as the head waitress and photographer for The Gables Restaurant. She moved back to Shirley and married Murray F. "Bill" Nye on May 5th, 1951. They made their home at Pittston Farm and Shirley where they raised their three children, Ben, Bill and Mary. \n\nShe taught herself to drive on the dirt roads around Pittston in her 40's. She was a Cub Scout Leader and a Den Mother. She loved to garden and fed her family and many of the town's children from her harvest. She was always involved in politics and loved a good discussion. She served the Town of Shirley as a librarian, selectwoman, school bus driver and town clerk. She also became an Operating Room Technician and worked at C.A. Dean Hospital for many years. She belonged to the Shirley She Club and enjoyed helping others. \n\nShe also had many hobbies including sewing, knitting and cooking. She cooked many gourmet dishes for her family and was known for her homemade coleslaw for many of the town's dinners. She was an active member of the Methodist Church of Shirley and later the Shirley Community Church.\n\nShe was her mother's best friend, a devoted wife to Bill, and a loving mother to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She looked forward to the annual Fall vacation with Bill to visit his family in "the county". She loved playing board and card games and would have the neighborhood children over after a day of sledding to play Monopoly long into the night. She loved to go sliding and swimming with her grandchildren when they visited with her. She could light up the room with her beautiful smile and her infectious laugh and let us not forget her ever present red lipstick. She loved all of her dear friends and would spend afternoons visiting.\n\nShe was predeceased by her \nparents; her husband, Murray "Bill" Nye; her granddaughter, Dorothy Macafee and grandson, Charles Grinnell. \n\nShe is survived by her sister, Ruth Morey Rosado and her husband, Raymond of Brooklyn, NY; her stepdaughter, Loretta Nye Grinnell of Milo; her son, Ben Alan Nye of Shirley; her son, Bill Angus Nye and his wife, Caroline of Ridgecrest, CA; her daughter, Mary Nye Watson and her husband, Drew of Shirley; her grandchildren, Peter, Marie, Richard, Christy, Nikki, Kerrie, Brie, Kindyll, and William; great-grandchildren Justin, Claire, Wyatt, Hailie, Tristan, Zaid and Mathew; her nephews, Patrick and Mark Vassale of NYC.\n\nA time of visitation will be held at 10 AM, Saturday, January 14, 2012 at the Shirley Community Church followed by a funeral service at 11am officiated by her cousin, Ronald Walden. A reception will follow at the church. \n\nA committal service will be held in the spring at the Shirley Cemetery. \n\nIn lieu of flowers, donations may be made to C.A.
