GARLAND- Norman B. Packard, 73, went to heaven to be with the Lord, September 30, 2016, following an accident at his home in Garland. He was born in Dexter, December 20, 1942, the son of Vernon and Emma (Grinnell) Packard.

He joined the Garland Fire Dept. at the age of 12 and continued for over 60 years; 26 of those years as Chief. He also worked for the State DOT for 25 years. Most recently he owned and operated his own garage. In the 1970's he was a little league coach for many of the young people in Garland. Also in the 1970's he helped to organize the Frosty Valley Snow Sledders. In 1978 he was one of the original organizers of Garland Days, and was well known for his bean hole beans.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Susan (Wintle) Packard of Garland; a daughter, Pamela (Packard) Smith and her fiance, Chad Hartley of Garland; 2 grandsons, Stephen Packard and his girlfriend, Erica Ryder of Dexter, and James Smith of Lincoln; 2 great grandsons, Liam and Carter; and 2 special nieces, Susie and Lynn.

He was predeceased by 3 brothers, and a sister.

Funeral services will be held at 11 AM, Wednesday, October 5, 2016, at the Garland Community Baptist Church, with Pastor Scott Millett officiating. Burial will follow at the Evergreen Cemetery in Garland. Friends may call at the church from 10 AM, until the time of the service.

Friends and family are invited back to the church following the burial for conversation and refreshments.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Garland Fire Dept. would be appreciated.
