DEXTER- Vernard H. Merrifield, 88, passed away peacefully at home October 23, 2014, after a brief period of failing health.\n\nVern was born in Rockland, March 15, 1926, the only child of Carl and Ora Merrifield, and enjoyed 66 years of marriage to his childhood sweetheart and best friend, Evelyn "June " Merrifield, who predeceased him December 23, 2013. They were inseparable and he was her primary round-the-clock care-giver in the final years of her life, only relinquishing that role when he was no longer physically able.\n\nTogether they had worked side by side and raised their family in the Camden Rockport area. Vern held many jobs over the course of his life and for some time operated his own business. In 1986 they retired to a "gentleman's farm" in St. Albans to be nearer to family and then relocated to Dexter in later years. \n\nHe was a lifelong outdoorsman and spent countless hours wandering the woods with his wife and especially his son. Vern wasn't the type of person to want to change the world nor did he ever try to. He was simply a good, honest, hardworking man... a man who always tried to do the right thing and in doing so, changed the world more than he ever knew.\n\nSurviving are a son, Elden Merrifield and his wife, Nancy of St. Albans; and a daughter, Cheryl Orcutt and her husband, Larry of Deer Isle.\n\nBy his own request, any future services will be private, and there will be no visiting hours. Friends may honor his memory with a gift to a charity of their choice.\n\nCremation arrangements by Crosby & Neal, Dexter.
