SANGERVILLE- Wanda Leah Foster, 77, died Saturday, February 7, 2015, at Mayo Regional Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft. She was born March 14, 1937, in Ashland, the daughter of Millard and Lucille (Huff) Smith.\n\nShe graduated from Piscataquis Community High School in 1954.\n\nShe was waitressing in Guilford when she met and fell for a sailor returning from sea. On Oct. 28, 1955, she married Sheldon W. Foster and began her career as a housewife, mother, and grandmother, raising and caring for her family until going home to be with her husband and daughter.\n\nWanda was an active member of the United Church of Christ and Grace Bible Church in Sangerville and has attended New Hope Baptist Church in Dexter for several years. She made her last service on Feb. 1st, driving herself over the snowy roads where Sheldon had taught her to drive so many miles before. \n\nShe was a life member and Past Worthy Matron of Susie Carr Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, where she most recently served as Secretary for 33 years. Wanda served as Grand Representative to Alberta, Canada, District Deputy 1969-71, and Grand Ruth 1982-83. In 1986-87, as Grand Worthy Matron, she travelled the state with Jane Boutlier, visiting every chapter. \n\nWanda worked with her husband in various charitable organizations including the Telephone Pioneers of America, even after his death. As part of her service through the Pioneers from 1994 through 2014, she knit and distributed 4,856 pairs of mittens to local Head Start and grammar school students, for which she recently received the Volunteer Service Award from President of the United States.\n\nWanda is survived by three sons, Steven and his wife, Sharon of Dexter, Andrew and his companion, Stacy of Dover-Foxcroft, and Nathan and his wife, Nikki of Taylors, SC; a son-in-law, David Cienmy of Tonawanda, NY; a sister, Minetta Brown; a brother, Worden "Jake" Smith and his wife, Glenda; a sister-in-law, Rose Smith; and a brother-in-law, Maynard Foster; her grandchildren Chad and Nick Gallison, Shawn Foster, Matthew Foster and his wife, Caitlin, Ashley Heron and her husband, Jeff, Andrew Jr. and Daisy Foster; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.\nShe was predeceased by her husband of 55 years in 2010, whom she cared for with love at home during his battle with Alzheimer's; a daughter, Norine Ciemny; three brothers, Leonard, Leo, and Millard Stewart Smith Jr.\n\nFriends may call 6 to 8 PM, Thursday, February 12th, at Crosby & Neal, 21 Oak Street in Guilford. \n\nA memorial service will be held 2 PM, Friday, February 13, 2015, at New Hope Baptist Church in Dexter, with spring burial in the Lawn Cemetery in Guilford. \n\nIn lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Almeda Chapter of the OES, c/o Howard Weymouth P.O.
