NEWPORT --William "Bill" Sawyer, 82, died May 7, 2012. He was born March 16, 1930 in Manchester, New Hampshire, a son of Wilmot and Laura (Lupien) Sawyer, and was the 8th named William in 11 generations of his family. \n\nHe graduated from Pinkerton Academy, Derry, NH, in 1949 and proudly served in the U. S. Air Force as a staff sergeant. He was stationed in the Aleutian Islands during the Korean air lift, serving as an air traffic controller.\n\nBill was an active member of the community and served in a number of capacities for the Town of Newport and the surrounding area. He was third selectman from 1957 to 1969, first selectman from 1969 to 1972, and was town constable from 1958 to 1974. He served on the town budget committee from 1958 to 1988, was on the town planning board from 1972 to 1999, and also served on the board of the Farmer's Home Administration. He was also a Penobscot County deputy sheriff for a number of years. \n\nBill owned and operated three businesses: the Wide Ruin Registered Holstein Dairy Farm for over 50 years, Sawyer's Dairy Bar for 34 years, as well as an LP gas business. He enjoyed exhibiting his cows locally and at Eastern States in Springfield, Mass. His stock brought home many ribbons.\n\nHe enjoyed hunting, fishing, sailing, boating, golfing, and gardening. He also enjoyed art and drawing, raising English Setters and Beagles. Bill enjoyed skiing with his family and was a ski instructor at Sugarloaf Mountain from 1959 to 1973. \n\nHe was a member of the Meridian Splendor Lodge AF & AM, was a 32nd Degree Mason and was a member of the Anah Shrine in Bangor. He was a member of the High Street Congregational Church in Newport, the Barrows-Skidgel Post American Legion, the Newport Kiwanis Club, and the Newport Snowmobile Club since 1969. Later in life he wintered in Florida with his wife, where they both volunteered for the Coast Guard Auxiliary for 10 years. \n\nHe is survived by his loving wife of nearly 60 years, Eleanor (Gothberg) of Newport; 6 children, William D. and wife Lisa Sawyer of North Newport, Jay and wife Nannett Sawyer of Norwich, CT, Steven and wife Mary Sawyer, Mark and wife Erika Sawyer Timothy and wife Tracy Sawyer, all of North Newport, Lisa Sawyer-Cardozo and husband Hal Cardozo of Palmyra; 9 grandchildren, William, Katie, Jared, Mathew, Brynn, Nate, Cole, Brady and Olivia; 5 great grandchildren, Garrett, Lauren, Ali, Maice, and Walker; nieces and nephews, Michael and Thomas Dalton, Patricia Edgecomb and Kathy Barkley; and a special family member Shelby Sawyer. \n\nHe was predeceased by a sister, Charlotte Dalton a grandson, Travis, and nephew Robert Beebe.\n\nFriends may call from 6 to 8 P.M. Sunday at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport, where a Coast Guard Auxiliary service will be held at 7 P.M. Funeral services will be held 10 A.M. Monday, May 14th, at the funeral home with Pastor James Boughman officiating. A military committal service will be held following the funeral in the North Newport Cemetery, Newport.
